What Is a Supplement β€” And Why 60-70% of Claims Need One

April 2026β€’5 min read

If you've filed a storm damage insurance claim, there's a good chance the initial estimate from your adjuster doesn't cover everything. That's where supplements come in β€” and understanding them can mean the difference between a partial repair and a full restoration.

What Is a Supplement?

A supplement is an additional claim submitted to your insurance company after the initial adjuster estimate. It documents damage or code-required items that were missed during the first inspection.

Think of it this way: the adjuster's first estimate is a starting point, not the final word. Supplements are a normal, legitimate part of the insurance process β€” and experienced contractors submit them regularly.

Why Do Most Claims Need Supplements?

Insurance adjusters are often handling dozens of claims at once, especially after a major storm. They may spend 30-60 minutes on your property. In that time, it's easy to miss:

  • Hidden damage β€” damage behind siding, under shingles, or in areas that aren't easily visible
  • Code-required upgrades β€” items like ice and water shield, drip edge, proper ventilation, and nailing patterns that building codes now require
  • Outbuildings β€” detached garages, barns, and sheds that are covered under the same policy
  • Soft metals β€” damaged flashing, pipe boots, and vents that need replacement
  • Permit fees β€” required by local jurisdictions but often left off the initial scope

How We Handle Supplements

When we find items that were missed, we don't just call the insurance company and hope for the best. We submit a formal supplement package that includes:

  • Annotated photos showing the specific damage or code issue
  • Xactimate line items matching the carrier's estimating format
  • Code references (IRC, local building codes) that require the upgrade
  • Manufacturer installation guidelines that support the scope

This level of documentation makes it much harder for the carrier to deny legitimate items. It's the difference between "we think this should be covered" and "here's the code reference, the photo evidence, and the Xactimate line item."

How Much Can a Supplement Add?

It varies by project, but supplements commonly add $2,000 to $10,000+ to the approved scope. On larger projects with multiple trades (roof + siding + gutters), supplements can add significantly more. This is money your insurance company owes you β€” it just wasn't caught the first time.
